Do knives really get dull in the dishwasher?

The short answer is "yes"
Knives and utensils with knife edges are delicate instruments that are negatively affected by moisture and high pressure such as from a dishwasher.
You may have heard that you shouldn't put knives in the dishwasher and that you should wash them by hand. Why is that?
Here are some important points that argue for hand washing:
- Hot water vapor from the dishwasher can damage the handles . If water soaks into the handle, it may crack. This applies to both wooden and plastic handles.
- Rust can form on the knife. Rust occurs when metal comes into contact with water and oxygen over time, such as when the knife air-drys in the dishwasher after the end of the washing program. This can lead to oxidation of the metal, which is chemically called corrosion. The connection between the metal particles becomes weaker, and the knife is more susceptible to nicks and damage along the knife edge, which makes it dull.
- Risk of broken tip/nicks in the knife edge. The chance that other kitchen utensils will end up on the knife and subject it to pressure so that it breaks increases. If the knife has been through the dishwasher several times and is exposed to rust, regular use will lead to a greater risk of nicks in the knife edge.
- Danger of cuts. If you are a little unlucky with your placement in the machine and have to quickly clean out the machine during a busy day, the accident could be out and end in a cut.
What about stainless steel?
Stainless steel is more resistant, but not immune to rust and corrosion. Even though the knife is made of stainless steel, it will be affected by being washed in the dishwasher repeatedly.
But how should they be washed?

The solution is simple! Wash immediately after use with regular dish soap , water and a dish brush/sponge . Wipe with a kitchen towel or paper immediately after washing, so that it does not air dry with water droplets on the blade. Feel free to rinse the knife when you change foods during cooking as well.
Vipps! Now you have some simple steps to take care of your knife so that it can last longer.
