Are dull knives more dangerous than sharp knives?

A sharp knife can sound scary.

Especially if you don't have much experience with sharp knives or cooking. But there are many reasons why a sharp knife is actually safer than a dull knife!

With a dull knife, you have to use more force to cut through the food. When you put a lot of force on the knife, it is easy to be unlucky and lose control of the knife so that it slips and you risk cutting yourself.

A sharp knife will get a better grip on the food it cuts. The blade wall will be narrower and the force applied will be more centered and less force is required per cut, compared to a blunt knife .

Should the accident happen and you cut yourself, a sharp knife will be less harmful . A sharp knife will give a cleaner cut which contributes to less chance of infection and it has been shown that wounds heal faster than when you cut yourself with a dull knife.

A sharp knife is more fun, safer and more cooperative in the kitchen! When the knife is sharp, you get more precise cuts and it becomes easier to work with the raw materials . This will give you more control over the knife and where it moves.

It is also important to ensure that you have a good surface , a kitchen bench or a table with a good working height. Use soft cutting felts made of wood or plastic that lie flat and steady, and that do not move when you cut on it.

Faster and more efficient

A sharp knife can cut down on the time spent cooking compared to a dull knife, because it cuts better and with less force. This means that you do not get tired as quickly while cutting and can work faster and more efficiently.

It is also easier to remove skin or bones from meat and fish, which can be difficult and time-consuming with a dull knife.

Finally, it is important to remember that sharp knives should be used with care and within the skill level you feel you have mastered.
