Made in Trondheim
Local craft, by hand
Plasteriet in Trondheim casts the handles to our design. Collected plastic is washed, ground and sorted by colour. The colours are mixed, and each handle is cast by hand, one at a time. The plastic settles differently every time, so the marbling on your handle exists only there. At Tomatosharp we fit the handle to the Japanese blade.
How we make the knife
Collecting plastic
We collect plastic waste that would otherwise have gone in the bin, and clean it.
Grinding the plastic
We break the plastic into smaller pieces so it is easier to shape.
Mixing colours
We mix and test colours to get the look we want.
Casting
The plastic is cast by hand in moulds made for the handle.
Cooling and trimming
Once the handle has taken shape in the mould, it cools before it is trimmed and made ready to fit to a blade.
Fitting the blade
We fit the blade to the handle. The handle can be replaced later if you want to change it.
