Description
This is the original Japanese folding knife, forged by the same family business in Miki, Japan, since 1899.
The knife is made with Aogami #2 steel (Blue Paper Steel), forged with the warikomi method, where a hard steel is placed between two softer layers to give a very sharp core that is easy to sharpen, while the construction stands up to daily use. Smiths have used this technique for generations, and you can read more about it in Knifenerd’s Guide to Japanese Knives (the chapter on Moritaka).
Higonokami was once used by both schoolchildren and teachers, for whittling, sharpening pencils, opening parcels or cutting fruit. It has a simple friction-lock design (no spring) and opens with the characteristic 'chikiri' lever.
We were lucky to get hold of a limited number. Our supplier in Japan waited more than 4 years for these, and we do not know when the next delivery will be.
A real working knife with history, personality and fine Japanese craftsmanship.

About the knife type: Petty (utility knife)
A higonokami is a traditional Japanese folding knife with a simple, functional design. It has no locking mechanism, but uses friction and a lever, called the chikiri, to open the blade and hold it in place. It is often carried in a pocket and used for everything from whittling and cooking to opening parcels. For over a hundred years it has been known in Japan as 'the everyday knife': a versatile tool that is easy to sharpen.
About the steel: Blue #2 (Aogami #2)
