This is the original Japanese folding knife, forged by the same family business in Miki, Japan, since 1899.
The knife is made of stainless steel.
Higonokami was once used by both pupils and teachers, to whittle, sharpen pencils, open parcels or cut fruit. It has a simple friction-lock design (no spring) and opens with the characteristic 'chikiri' lever.
We were lucky to get hold of a limited number. Our supplier in Japan waited over 4 years for these, and we do not know when the next delivery will be.
A real working knife with history, character and a fine piece of Japanese craft.
Nagao Kanekoma has forged the Japanese folding knife higonokami since 1894 and is today the only workshop with the right to use the name.
Everything from Nagao KanekomaA higonokami is a traditional Japanese folding knife with a simple, functional design. It has no locking mechanism, but uses friction and a lever, called the chikiri, to open the blade and hold it in place. It is often carried in a pocket and used for everything from whittling and cooking to opening parcels. For over a hundred years it has been known in Japan as 'the everyday knife': a versatile tool that is easy to sharpen.
Wash by hand in warm water, and dry it straight away.
Never the dishwasher. Use a cutting board of wood or plastic, not glass or stone.
