The blades are forged freehand, and practicality comes before fine polishing. Many have kurouchi, the black finish from the forge. The funayuki, the fishermen's boat knife, is common here and rare elsewhere. The first thing the smiths made was the nata, a Japanese hatchet. Brands here include Kyohei, Tosa Cutlery, Zakuri, Tetsujin Hamono and Tsunehisa.
